Arlington Occupational Driver's License Attorney

Tarrant County Occupational Driver’s License Attorney Serving Texas

Did you know that you can still drive under certain circumstances even if your driver's license is revoked or suspended? In simple terms, a Tarrant County occupational driver's license is a special and restricted driving license that offers you the freedom to drive non-commercial vehicles for essential needs. Essential needs include things such as school, work, or to accomplish other essential duties. Whatever your needs may be, The Dameron Law Firm is ready to help you.

Typically, the terms of your occupational driver's license and where to file the Petition for an Occupational License will depend on the type of license suspension. A license can be suspended by the Department of Public Safety or a Judge after a criminal conviction. There is also another type of occupational driver's license that you can obtain following the suspension of driver's license for driving while intoxicated, which has no "essential need" restrictions but will require an SR-22 insurance certificate and an ignition interlock device.

How Do You Get an Occupational Driver's License in Tarrant County?

Before you start looking for an occupational driver's license, you need to keep in mind that the overall process can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks. Therefore, you should not be frustrated if the process is taking longer than you anticipated!

This process involves petitioning the county, district, or Justice of Peace where you reside, or the court that issued the suspension to obtain your occupational driver's license. A Petition is a request for a court to issue an order. The court order will authorize the Texas Department of Public Safety to process your license and allow you to legally get back on the road.

Once the county, district, or Justice of the Peace signs the Occupational License Order, you will need to mail the Petition, Order, SR-22 certificate, and SR-37 form with a money order for the fees to the Department of Public Safety. Once received, the Department of Public Safety will mail you an Occupational License.

Department of Safety Mailing Address, Email Information, and Fax Number

You are supposed to submit all the necessary documents including the fee in an envelope to the Department of Public Safety mailing address for processing. We recommend sending the documents by certified mail, return receipt requested to verify they received the letter. Make sure that you write your full name, driver's license number, and date of birth on each document that you submit. You must wait at least 21 working days before you start making inquiries, as this is the typical length required to process your documents. The DPS official mailing address is:

Safety Responsibility Bureau
Occupational License Section
Texas Department of Public Safety
Box 15999
Austin, Texas 78761-5999

Keep in mind that if you do not submit all documents at the same time, the department will send an official request to you for additional documents that were missing. You can submit these documents by fax number 512-424-2848 or send them via email todriver.improvement@dps.texas.gov

What Is SR-22 Insurance?

If you are working on getting an occupational driver's license, you will encounter the term SR-22 insurance quite often. But what is it, and why do you need it to apply for a Tarrant County occupational driver's license?

The truth is that SR-22 is not an insurance policy but a certification that is filed with the state. It is a certificate of financial responsibility that verifies you are carrying the state-mandated amount of auto insurance. It is a way of your insurance company guaranteeing the state that you are maintaining your auto coverage and that you are financially responsible for any accidents that may happen while you are driving.

The only way to obtain this certification in Texas is from an auto insurance company after you purchase your car insurance policy. You can't get the SR-22 insurance in any other way. If you already have existing car insurance, you will request your provider to add the SR-22 certificate to it. If your current insurance provider doesn't file the form or if you are currently uninsured, you must shop for a new policy to get the certification.
